Fan uncovers Robert Altman’s first film…

The instructional flick, titled Modern Football, was shot by Altman in 1951. It tells the story of “a scrawny freshman named Jones, who, with the help of Wheaties … lives out his bleacher dreams of quarterback glory.” (Note: Wheaties is a sponsor, which is why it’s also part of the plot.)

Modern Football is one of 27 sponsored films Altman made for the Kansas City, Mo.-based company Calvin Communications. No other print is known to exist.

Filmmaker Gary Huggins discovered the flick at a Kansas City drive-in while he was making his own movie. And here’s the cool part: He has uploaded the whole thing onto YouTube.
